Te Pāti Māori co-leader, Rawiri Waititi, has revealed his next move is to the music scene where he has already made his mark while a Member of Parliament.
Often found with a guitar on his lap in the debating chamber, Waititi says he feels “free” and “youthful” after making the decision to step away from politics.
“When I did that waiata in Parliament about marching on stolen Māori land,” he said, “it really got me thinking ‘man I need to do this more’, so I am.”
He says none of the other parties listen to him anyway and he’s sick of dealing with “ignorant muppets who ignore the facts.” He noted that David Seymour stinks out the whole Beehive, so he wants to sing about him in particular “from a distance.”
“Racist sweat is a different thing, I tell you.”
He says, “when even the Greens are manufacturing consent for the West’s forever wars,” te Pāti Māori has increaingly less chance of dismantling the colonial system from within.
Te Pāti Māori is looking into changing their name to “Te Pāti Waiata” to honour Waititi’s contributions to the Māori Party movement.
